The Tewkesbury U3A was launched in September 1991 and now has over 800 members in the Tewkesbury area involved in all sorts of daytime activities. There are around 40 interest groups, from art workshops to keep fit, from language classes to garden visits. Something for everyone. Many members have moved to the recently launched Bishops Cleeve U3A.

Some interest groups meet weekly, others once or twice a month, in local halls or private homes, during the day. As the group operates a mutual help system, mostly without tutors, members are encouraged to take an active part in meetings.

We also have a monthly General Meeting with an invited speaker on a topic of general interest. Further details of future General Meeting talks are available.

As a member of the Tewkesbury & District University of the Third Age you will receive "Third Age News" (U3A's national newspaper) and "TUTA News" which gives details of local group activities. You also have the opportunity to widen your horizons, make new friends, follow an interest or hobby which time or circumstances hasn't allowed before, learn something new - become a more interesting person!

Tewkesbury U3A is managed by a Committee elected at the Annual General Meeting. Details of the current Committee.

Awards for All

We recently applied for a grant from the Lottery Fund, known as Awards for All, and we are pleased to say that we got the full amount we asked for - £9690. Our membership had reached the total of 900+, and we felt our groups were suffering with equipment shortage; some items were on loan, some belonged to the leaders concerned, and very few items were owned by the U3A. The groups were asked to put forward their suggestions and requirements and outline their needs.
A list of items was presented to the committee, who made a case for the various items to be included in the grant. A big thank-you goes out to all those who helped to make this grant possible.
To date, there are still a few items outstanding, mainly due to the flooding that has damaged some of our venues - in particular the BBHQ. The council has delayed reparation work, because of other priorities: but our groups continue to meet elsewhere, and enjoy the meaning of U3A togetherness. Peter Lawson-Smith.
